Just Call Me Sparky

Busy day for me today. My wife has been after me to relocate our dining area light fixture to over the center of the table for the past 10 months. The builder never took into consideration a sensible furniture layout and just located the existing light fixture with what seems to be a throw of a dart. Yesterday I went to several electrical wholesale companies and purchased all the parts I needed and today I moved the darn thing. Being a two story home makes it difficult due to no accessible ceiling space but I managed to complete the task in two hours, but not without several “ah craps.” I never realized how many parts there were to a decorative light fixture and if you don’t plan the disassembly in a methodical manner…putting it back together after re-wiring it can be a challenge. Next time I will take a picture.

My hands aren’t as nimble as they once were and my eyes just don’t work like they use to, not to mention my mechanical thought process just doesn’t seem to effortlessly flow like it once did. My balance on a 6′ step ladder just isn’t what it use to be either. That old saying, “Measure twice and cut once” is good advice and I recommend everyone adhere to those wise words when taking on do-it-yourself projects at home. Especially when your cutting holes in your ceiling. As far as the wiring goes, it’s like riding a bicycle and just comes naturally.

I am truly blessed to have my health and ability to do projects around the home. I get a real sense of satisfaction out of completing home projects and I love to force my wonderful wife into praising my mechanical abilities. She of course knows me well enough to make a huge deal out of the accomplishments and placates me just to shut me up. I’m a lucky guy to have her.

Tomorrow I think I will begin painting the staircase and the upstairs hallway.

    Sparky:
Your builder must have been a republican. I am sure that the manufacturer of the light fixture must have been a republican, too. I am also concrened about the 6′ ft step ladder. Was it OSHA approved? Did you have the necessary community permits to take on such a professional remodeling project?

Where do I begin Steady Teddy? The builder was undoubtedly an illegal Hispanic. The Chinese light fixture manufacturer didn’t mention his political party but then again I couldn’t read the Chinese instructions. The 6′ ladder was most definitely an OSHA approved ladder and proudly made with union labor. And no…I took a chance and decided to forgo the electrical permit, ladder permit, painting permit, breathing permit, and just because we say so permit. Please don’t call the IBEW Local Union and tell them I was doing their work. The last thing I need around here is a bunch of rowdy union electricians picketing my job site.

What say you?
