Gomer

GOMER PYLE, USMC

I just finished painting the stairwell, the second floor hallway, the linen closet, and the laundry room. My body is crying out for help. The laundry room was the straw that broke the camels back with me having to crawl behind the washer and dryer and then pull myself out. I’m too darned old for this stuff.

Getting to the point. I listened to the radio and TV the entire time I was painting and couldn’t get over the incredible jettison of Mike Huckabee to the top of the GOP presidential hopefuls. The very likable and quick witted Huckabee is a very charismatic character but to have him as the GOP Presidential candidate in ‘08 is not good. I agree with several pundits out there that he is indeed the Republican version of the worst President in the history of the United States, that being Jimmy Carter. I think this is why the main stream media is playing him up so big. They want him to be the GOP candidate because they know whoever the Democrats run will smear him in the general election. My Observation. Do you think Mike Huckabee looks like the 1960’s TV star Jim Nabors who played Gomer Pyle, USMC? I think he does.

I’m still undecided on who I support but I can assure you it won’t be Huckabee. I think there may be a dark side to Rudy, however I admire him greatly for his stand on terrorism and think he would continue to keep our country safe. I also think John McCain and Mitt Romney are great candidates too. All in all, the entire field of GOP candidates appear to be a good choice for America with that one exception. The crucial thing is to keep Hillary and that husband of hers out of office as a co-presidency.

Rumor has it that Hillary will appoint hubby Bill to the Supreme Court if she is elected. OMG, God save the queen! He who lied under oath a Supreme Court Justice! That happening could put me in the grave.

I have always thought that 3rd party candidates were spoilers, unworthy of the competition. For the first time in my life I am wondering if it isn’t time for a 3rd party candidate. Money continues to be the driving force behind each parties candidate. Now poll taking is also shaping the decision making process. In a world where cell phones are becoming more and more popular (especially with the younger crowd) I question the accuracy of a polling process that questions only those with land line telephones. I think the only thing that will fix this is term limits for the legislature and spending limits on the elections. I wish one of the pollsters would ask the question, “what are the 5 most important issues to you in selecting a candidate? ” It would be interesting to see just what Americans really want. It is distressing that nobody seems to know. I am 60 years old and afraid for my 6 children and 5 grandchildren. I could be more excited about Gomer Pyle than any of the “frontrunners” I see now.

I don’t think that the comparison to Jimmy Carter is accurate.

If you don’t like Mike Huckabee, it would be more accurate to compare him to Bill Clinton. He has all the charm, without the womanizing, the social liberalism, and the tendency for his enemies to turn up dead.

Or you could compare him to William Jennings Bryan. Again, he was a great speaker, but unsound in his policies.

I happen to like Mike, but I am concerned about his fiscal conservatism, or lack of it. I don’t think he’s a liberal, but I think in economics he doesn’t have a fully developed view. Also in Arkansas he had to deal with a big Democratic majority, so he had to make a lot of compromises, and his accomplishments might reflect that. (Just like Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani.)

I can’t share your opinion on Rudy. His social liberalism, including support even for partial birth abortion, makes him totally unacceptable to me. (I’ll stay home in November if he’s nominated.) I think that the only thing that distinguishes him from a modern liberal is that he’s a tough guy.

    Ray,
It appears we both agree Rudy has a dark side, but I don’t think I would stay home and not vote if he were to be nominated. He would be the lesser of the two evils should Hillary be nominated. If I may ask, how do you feel about Mitt Romney and John McCain? As of today, there just doesn’t appear to be a front runner in the GOP field.

I can live with Romney and McCain, though I do not fully trust either of them to govern conservatively. Thompson would be OK too, tough I’m not sure whether he is a real conservative or is just playing one.

I can usually vote for the lesser of two evils, but social liberalism, plus no evidence of economic conservatism, plus using tax dollars for security for one’s mistress is too much to swallow. Also, since he is from New York, he has perhaps never governed any territory where a cow lived. I think that is a deficiency that will really hurt in the general election.

I really wouldn’t mind a brokered convention, where a dark horse nominee comes out, and Hillary or Obama have to face a total surprise.

Points presented very well and I tend to agree with you. Thanks Ray.
