We’ll Show You Big Oil

It appears the all knowing Democrats in Congress have solved all of our gasoline and oil related energy problems. They’ve finally discovered what they believe to be the only logical answer to our high fuel costs. They’re promoting, not to mention grandstanding, to increase taxes on oil company profits. What fools these Democrats are and how did we get to this level of stupidity?

Jonah Goldberg had an interesting piece titled Take That, Big Oil on Townhall-dot-com today related to the Democrat’s solution to high fuel costs. Here’s some of what Mr. Goldberg had to say regarding their view of things.

Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Pa, is offering his “Consumer Reasonable Energy Price Protection Act,” which would make oil companies supplicants of a Reasonable Profits Board. Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid, proposed their 25 percent windfall profits tax this week, while Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Alpha Centauri, has been calling for a 100 percent windfall profits tax rate for some time. Hillary Clinton is barnstorming the country talking about a windfall profits tax that will not only stick it to the corporate fat cats but will “pay” for a gas tax holiday.

Not one of these mental giants mentioned drilling for oil in our many untapped domestic oil fields or off of our shores. Not one mention was made of building new refineries or nuclear power plants. Not one word. All these liberal hacks can come up with is punishing the oil companies for doing what they’re suppose to do and that is to make a profit. Why don’t they just do what Jimmy Carter’s dictator pal Hugo Chavez did in Venezuela and nationalize the oil companies and get it over with?

There is only one answer to American’s oil problems and that solution is to drill and refine more domestic oil. Until the people of this country wake up and start demanding we not fall prey to the environmental extremists and other wacko special interest groups who own congress, we will continue to have oil shortages and higher fuel prices. The Democrat’s latest hair brained idea of increasing taxes on big oil will just exacerbate the problem and increase our pain at the pumps. This country is in for some very hard times ahead if we don’t start demanding more from our elected officials than this.

I think the media generally have been derelict in their general desire aid these people. I have seen no major outlet discuss the effects of the last time this was tried, 1980-88. I’ve read some accounts of the disastrous effect it had on domestic production–which makes sense when you consider how expensive it is for us to drill and how much cheaper it is for people like the saudis.

Make oil production more expensive and more of that production will flow to the OPEC states. Meanwhile, we’ll use whatever money we’re making on the project supposedly to create the “green jobs” that they keep promising will strengthen this economy but (for some reason) the free market hasn’t seen fit to create. What a disaster, once again.

But that’s what you get when your policy is directed by irrational emotion, rather than reason. Supporters of stuff like this must try to use their heads once in a while.

    Jerry,
Your comment says it all. It does my heart good to see I’m not alone in how I see this thing. Back when Jimmy Carter (D) first introduced windfall profit taxes on big oil…it was one of the first of his many debacles as a president. We had gas rationing, long lines, and all the media hype to go with it.

Thanks so much for your comment and continued support.

As I understand it, “BIG” oil make 8 to 9 cents on the dollar. Where’s the windfall? The government, depending on what state you live in, makes as much 18 to 22 cents on the dollar. (federal and state) The president isn’t going to change a thing. We need to elect Senators and Congressmen who want to make the country better and who are not looking for a 24 year career. Alaska oil, despite what you hear from the media, would only require a 2,000 acre footprint in the 18 million acre ANWR. Let’s get real! Tell the caribou to move over a little.

What say you?
